This option is best for makeup removal.

The Sea Sponge is a renewable natural resource. Sponges are naturally antibacterial due to its enzymatic composition, they are also biodegradable, being an eco-sustainable low waste alternative to replace cotton pads, cleansing wipes made of polyester (a petroleum by-product) that is non-biodegradable and non-recyclable.

Natural sea sponges are very good for all types of skin, including sensitive skin. They contain minerals such as potassium, zinc, iron, sodium, and magnesium. They also gently exfoliate your skin, removing dead skin cells.

They contain a natural enzyme that blocks the growth of bacteria. This, in turn, inhibits the odours associated with artificial sponges and ensures they are anti-bacterial.

When sponges are harvested, the sponge divers hand cut each sponge to ensure that more than one inch of the base remains intact. The sponge  re-grows to its original form within 3-5 years. All divers are licensed by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commision and only harvest wool, yellow and grass sponges of at least 5" in size by hand-cutting each one. Harvesting smaller sizes is illegal.

When the sponges are cut. pieces of the sponge remain on the seabed and within a few years grow back to their full size. Also, some pieces will break off and attach themselves to new areas and grow into new sponges.

Natural Sea Sponges possess remarkable powers of regeneration. Broken of bits of sea sponge are carried by off by water currents and have the ability to settle in another location and re-grow into a clone of the parent sponge. They are extremely porous and rely on a constant flow of water through their bodies to obtain food and oxygen, and to remove wastes.

Studies have shown that areas harvested actually increase the population density of sponges.

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission regulates the commercial and recreational take of sea sponges and through a series of 'crop / harvest rotation' to ensure that the harvest of sea sponges never impacts surrounding ocean species and also, ensuring that the base of the sponge remains intact to allow the sponge to regrow.

Uses:

Sea sponges are very versatile. You can use them in the bath as a natural exfoliator, as a household cleaner, to wash your dishes, wash your car, applying and removing make-up, painting and as decoration next to your bathtub.

Caring of your sea sponge:

We recommend to disinfect natural sponges on a regular basis, usually every 2-3 weeks if used daily and washing it with soap and water after each use, letting them to dry, removing excess of water. Never twist the sponge to remove excess of water. Treat it as you would treat your pet.

  1. Rinse the natural sponge under a cold running water.
  2. Soak the sponge in a small bowl filled with 2 tablespoons of vinegar or 1tbs of baking soda to each liter of water. Leave to soak for 2 hours.
  3. Remove from the bowl and squeeze to remove excess liquid.
  4. Set out to dry on a clean surface, such as the bathtub or next to your sink
  5. Use again. The sponge should be as good as new as baking soda and vinegar will revitalize the sponge's cellular structure for increased durability
